THE RED ENVELOPE TRADITION
The red
envelope tradition is a Chinese culture and custom that has
long been practiced throughout Chinese history. The color red
symbolizes good luck and power. The rectangular shape of the
envelope resembles an ancient shield and symbolizes protection.
The use of the red envelope is for good luck, power and protection
from evil and negative forces.
In Black Sect Feng Shui, the Red Envelope Ritual is a time-honored
tradition. It is traditional that when you receive sacred knowledge,
you should give the person who transmits such knowledge directly
to you, one or more new red envelopes that include a token amount
of money. In doing so, (1) you show sincere intention
and respect for the sacred knowledge that is shared with you,
(2) it protects the teacher's or consultant’s chi, or
life force, for sharing the sacred knowledge, and (3) it increases
the strength and effectiveness of the cures provided to you.
The number of red envelopes is determined by the importance
of the cure or the information that is received. For each
cure, there should be 1, 3, 9, 27, 99 or 108 new red envelopes
that include a token amount of money. For a standard consultation,
nine is the chosen number because it is the most yang number
and symbolizes power and completion—eight envelopes
containing a token (usually $1) of monetary appreciation, and
the ninth envelope containing the consultation fee.
